REPS Researchers Showcase Transportation Safety Innovations at the ASCE Transportation Conference 2026
The Research, Education, for Promoting Safety (REPS) Center was well represented at the 2026 ASCE Transportation Conference, where faculty and students shared innovative research addressing transportation safety, pedestrian behavior, and infrastructure resilience. Hosted by the ASCE Transportation and Development Institute (T&DI) in partnership with the Michigan Department of Transportation, the conference brought together leading researchers and practitioners from around the world.
Dr. Sara KamanMalek, Assistant Professor, presented her research on "An Interdisciplinary Framework for Evaluating Behavioral Interventions and Safety Strategies for Distracted Pedestrians." REPS undergraduate researcher Abdul Nafay Saleem, a Civil Engineering student, presented "Software Infrastructure System to Reduce Pedestrian Distraction at Intersections," highlighting innovative technology-based solutions to improve pedestrian safety.
REPS researcher Dr. Luwei Zeng presented "Not Waiting for Crashes: Reliable Prediction of Pedestrian Close Calls from Statewide Video," demonstrating how large-scale video analytics can proactively identify pedestrian safety risks before crashes occur.
REPS Director Dr. Claudia Marin-Artieda presented two papers showcasing advances in computer vision and structural health monitoring for transportation infrastructure:
- Vision-based Structural Characterization for Transportation Structures Using Displacement Time Series.
- Video-based Inverse Damage Quantification for Bridge Health Monitoring: A Physical Demonstration.
Together, these presentations highlighted REPS' commitment to developing innovative, data-driven solutions that improve transportation safety and infrastructure performance.
